Lili Reinhart Opens Up About Betty Cooper & Female Friendship

Betty Cooper, who was primarily defined in the Archie comics by her crush on Archie Andrews, is often seen as a the “girl next door.” Everything from her blonde ponytail down to her love of automotive repair made Betty a prototype for wholesome Americana as it was defined when the comics debuted in the 1940s.

But the ‘40s have long since passed, and as we all know, looks can sometimes be deceiving. Often, the “girl next door” has a lot of secrets of her own, and while it’s easy to hide behind a smile, her outward appearance doesn’t tell the whole story.

When Riverdale premieres tonight on the CW, it will give Betty that reboot that she deserves, showing audiences that there’s a multi-layered and complex girl underneath that bouncy hair and jean jacket.

For Lili Reinhart, who plays Betty, that three-dimensional transformation of these characters was extremely important. In the comics, Betty is tangled within a love triangle consisting of herself, Archie, and Veronica that, despite Betty’s friendship with Veronica, serves as a huge plot for a lot of the comics. Pitting women against each other? We’re so not here for that.

Fall’s Fresh Faces: Lili Reinhart

Lili Reinhart in The CW’s buzzy new series Riverdale—the network’s live-action take on the beloved Archie Comics series—but we can assure you it’s worth the wait. Reinhart plays Betty Cooper, arguably one of the most famous high school blondes, but don’t expect a rivalry between her and Veronica Lodge. This fresh take on the story promotes positivity in female friendships.

Independent Woman: “I think people will appreciate the fact that we’re making her [Betty] more of a modern-day human being. She’s not just falling into Archie’s arms every time he wants to be with her over Veronica.”

Solidarity of Sisterhood: “[Betty and Veronica] are the famous frenemies, but in our show, we’re focusing more on the friendship between them, because these girls’ lives don’t revolve around men and around Archie. These girls are going to be friends at the end of the day; that’s what’s important to us.”

Throwback Thursday: “The fashion definitely represents all different eras in a sense. Veronica wears very shapely, slimming clothes that would be from the ’40s, and Betty wears a lot of light, breezy fabrics. A lot of florals and cottons to go along with her personality.”

Grandma Chic: “Honestly, I’m quite modest in my clothing. It’s funny, I sent a picture to my mom a couple of months ago asking her what she thinks of my outfit and she said, ‘You know what, you’re 19, you’re young. You don’t need to dress like a grandmother all the time!’”

Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart Talk ‘Riverdale’

Camila Mendes
Camila Mendes began her acting career as a cranberry. The production was a third grade play, The Turkeys Go On Strike, and, as Mendes recalls, “I was taking the role so seriously, playing all sorts of emotions. I think that’s when I started to get a kick out of it because the audience was laughing, and people seemed to be enjoying my performance.”

Mendes is taking her newest role just as seriously. In Riverdale, the CW’s dramatic reimagining of Archie Comics, the Miami native plays Veronica Lodge, a snobby vixen whose large wealth is matched only by her attitude. But Mendes insists this is the most connected she has felt to a character. “I had never felt more confident about a role and about playing a character than I had with Veronica. I read the breakdown for this and I was like, she could not be closer to who I am.”

Local fans of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” a popular NBC program, may have noticed a familiar face on the Nov. 30 episode.

Lili Reinhart, a 15-year-old sophomore at Bay High School, was scheduled to make her primetime TV acting debut on the police drama. She played a principal role as a teenage character named Courtney Lane.

“It’s all pretty incredible, and I’m honestly very excited,” Reinhart said. “It was very different from everything I’ve done before. A lot more crazy — very fast-paced.”

Reinhart spoke with Sun News prior to the episode airing, so she couldn’t discuss details of her role. However, she had the opportunity to appear with most of the show’s major characters.

“I got to work with incredible actors and actresses who were so experienced, and they definitely taught me a lot,” she said. “It was really great to work with professional actors.”
